In recent years, public schools have been under attack from outside groups, often funded by billionaire dark money donors, professing “parents’ rights” and advocating for “school choice.” This series reported on the leaders of this anti-public school movement who have pushed for universal school vouchers to divert money away from public schools to subsidize private and religious schools. Since 2020, 200 bills at the local, state and federal levels have been aimed at censoring teaching that presents students with critical views of slavery and other forms of racial oppression that are an undeniable part of American history.
